If you’re planning a trip to Ghana, packing smart will make your experience much smoother and more enjoyable.
Here’s a practical guide based on tried-and-true items that proved very useful during our own travels around Ghana.
Bags and Carrying Essentials
- Kavu Rope Sling Bag – Perfect for hiking or just walking through the streets.
- Fanny Packs – Osprey makes great options for secure, easy access while shopping or exploring markets.
- Crossbody Bags – Lululemon makes excellent lightweight and durable bags, ideal for visiting busy markets like Makola Market.
Travel Comfort
- Cabeau Neck Pillow – A lifesaver on long flights or when hotel pillows aren’t great.
- Earplugs (Eargasm brand recommended) – Useful for sleeping, concerts, or noisy areas.
- Headphones – AirPods Pro are convenient, but it’s also good to carry a pair of wired headphones for flights.
Travel Documents & Health Requirements
- Passport – Don’t forget the obvious!
- Yellow Fever Vaccination Card – Mandatory for entry into Ghana. Keep it with your passport.
- Malaria Medication – Start taking these a few days before traveling, as prescribed by your doctor. You’ll need to continue taking the medication after you return as well. Some bottles recommend 7 days after you return, while others say to finish the entire prescription. You may feel nauseous when taking them, so it’s best to take the pills with food. Remember—dealing with a little nausea is far better than dealing with malaria.
- Mosquito Repellent – DEET or picaridin-based repellents are essential for evening and outdoor adventures. Apply daily and follow the instructions on the bottle.
Electronics & Power
- Anker Power Bank – Great for keeping your phone charged during hikes or long day trips. The one I’ve linked can fully charge a phone from 0 to 100% three times before needing to be recharged.
- Anker Nano Travel Adapters – Ghana uses Type G and Type D plugs, so bring the right adapter. The Nano travel adapters work great. Get two if you have several devices.
Water & Food Essentials
- Hydro Flask or Refillable Bottle – Stay hydrated but remember to only refill with bottled water. Verna is a popular brand of bottled water, and you can find it in almost every grocery store.
- Snacks, Gum, and Cough Drops – Convenient during long trips or while exploring.
Clothing & Weather Prep
- Sunglasses – The sun can be intense.
- Sunscreen – A must for the beach, like Labadi Beach, and general outdoor activities.
- Poncho or Rain Jacket – Essential if you’re traveling during the rainy season.
Hygiene & Health
- Wet Wipes and Hand Sanitizer – Very handy when bathrooms aren’t easily accessible, especially on road trips or hikes.
- Tide Pods or Laundry Detergent – If your accommodation has laundry access, these are small and easy to pack.
- Basic First Aid & Medicines:
- Band-aids
- Neosporin and cortisone cream for cuts or bites
- Tylenol, Advil, or your preferred pain reliever
- Pepto-Bismol chews (easier to travel with than liquid)
- Imodium (last resort for severe stomach issues)
- Dramamine (especially useful for motion sickness—get both regular and non-drowsy if needed)
Extras
- Swim Goggles – If you plan on swimming at the beach or pool.
- Small Daypack or Folding Bag – Handy for day trips or market shopping.
Final Thoughts
Packing well for Ghana doesn’t mean overpacking—it’s about bringing the essentials that will help you stay safe, healthy, and comfortable. From mosquito repellent and malaria medication to the right bags and travel adapters, these little details can make a huge difference in your trip.
